Quick answer

A Singapore chicken pie is a pastry pie filled with chicken in gravy or cream sauce, usually with potato, carrot and peas, and in the Hainanese style half a hard-boiled egg. Heartland bakeries sell small ones for about $1.50 to $4; specialists such as Don Pie sell larger personal pies for about $6 to $9 and whole pies that feed 4 to 6.

Chicken pie is Singapore’s default pie. It turns up in school canteens, office pantries, hotel cafes and birthday tables. For a buyer, the main decision is which style and size suits the occasion.

What styles of chicken pie can you buy?

Chicken pies in Singapore come in three broad styles:

Style What it is like Price per personal pie Examples
Old-school heartland Small pie, creamy filling of diced chicken, carrot, potato and peas About $1.50 to $4 Balmoral Bakery (about $1.80 in 2024), Polar Puffs & Cakes ($3.20), Kopi & Tarts ($3.20)
Premium Hainanese-style Larger pie, chunky chicken, potato, vegetables, spices, half an egg About $6 to $9 Don Pie ($6.80 personal on its February 2026 menu)
Gourmet and cafe Puff or sourdough crusts, cream and mushroom, truffle or seafood twists About $8 to $19 Délifrance ($8.50 to $8.90), Marymount Bakehouse (from about $16.90)

These styles sit inside the wider family in our guide to the best types of pies. For pot pies and other formats, see how the main chicken pie styles compare.

What should you look for in a good chicken pie?

From a buyer’s point of view, four things separate a good chicken pie from a disappointing one:

  1. Filling to pastry ratio. You want a pie that is full to the lid, not a pastry shell with sauce.
  2. Recognisable chicken. Chunks rather than shreds, ideally leg meat, which stays moist.
  3. Crust that holds. A crust that stays crisp after reheating, not one that collapses into steam.
  4. Freshness policy. Some kitchens bake daily in small batches; Don Pie, for one, describes a “zero overnight pies” policy.

About DonChef’s Original Chicken Pie

DonChef’s Original Chicken Pie follows the recipe Chef Don Lim, the founder of Don Pie, created in 1983, and the Tyrwhitt Road kitchen he co-founded still bakes it. It has a golden, flaky crust around chunky chicken, potato, vegetables and a spice blend, with half a hard-boiled egg. The egg is a Hainanese-style hallmark, and originaldon.com explains why there is half an egg in a Singapore chicken pie. The brand calls it “Singapore’s original Chicken Pie, since 1983”. Variants on the same menu include Black Pepper Chicken, Chicken Shepherd’s (the Black Pepper filling under baked mash) and Curry Pie.

Reviewers have described it in different ways: some call the crust buttery and flaky, others more biscuit-like than French pastry. We use the brand’s own phrase, “golden, flaky crust”, and there is a longer note on why it is not called shortcrust. The kitchen uses no pork and no lard and is not Halal-certified.

Our Don Pie shop guide lists the five outlets that sell it.

Personal or whole chicken pies?

For offices and children, buy personal chicken pies. For seated meals and parties, whole chicken pies are better value: a whole pie feeds 4 to 6. As a reference, Don Pie’s February 2026 menu listed a whole Original Chicken Pie at $33.80 against $6.80 for a personal one, as of October 2026. Check the official site for current prices.

How do you keep a chicken pie at its best?

Eat chicken pies warm, within a few hours of buying if you can. Reheat chilled pies in an oven at 150 to 180C for about 20 to 30 minutes for a personal pie, or use an air fryer, and check that the centre reaches at least 75C. Do not leave them at room temperature for more than 2 hours. The full method is in how to store, transport and reheat pies.
